As the 12 degree of conversion during this process increases more freshwater is recovered from 13 the feedwater. As a result, the salt concentration in the feed increases up to a point 14 where the solubility limit could be reached. Experimentally, it is known that adding an 15 organic substance such as ethanol to salty water induces salt precipitation. This work 16 investigated the solid-liquid equilibrium of the system water-ethanol-NaCl-CaSO4 at 17 25°C. Results show that as the ethanol content is increased CaSO4 solubility decreases. 18 On the other hand, brine from the reverse osmosis plant at the University of Alicante 19 was treated with ethanol to precipitate calcium sulfate and produce brine containing less 20 calcium and sulfate. The treated brine was analyzed and its calcium content was 21 compared with the predicted value based on the experimental data. The results suggest 22 that it is possible to use ethanol to precipitate the salts from brine in order to obtain a 23 higher degree of conversion in a reverse osmosis process. The obvious limitation of the 24 method is the cost of recovering the ethanol by separation. 25

Thermodynamics of the solubility of potassium nitrate in the mixed solvent, Ethanol+Water, and the related Ion-association

Using the evaporating method, the solubility of potassium Nitrate was determined in various mixtures containing Water and Ethanol at 25°C. The results show that the solubility of KNo3 decreases with increasing the mass percent of Ethanol in the mixtures. This trend is along with decreasing the dielectric constant of Water+Ethanol mixtures. Moreover, it can be concluded that the totqal solubilit...

Performance Study of Reverse Osmosis Plants for Water Desalination in Bandar-Lengeh, Iran

Introduction: Reverse osmosis (RO) is best known for its use in desalination (removing the salt from seawater to get fresh water), but since the early 1970s it has also been used to purify fresh water for medical, industrial, and domestic applications. The aim of this research was the performance study of reverse osmosis plants for water desalination in Bandar-Lengeh, Iran. Materials and Meth...

Performance of Potassium Bicarbonate and Calcium Chloride Draw Solutions for Desalination of Saline Water Using Forward Osmosis

Forward osmosis (FO) has recently drawn attention as a promising membrane based method for seawater and brackish water desalination. In this study, we focus on the use of calciun chloride (CaCl2) and potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) as inorganic salt draw solution candidates due to their appropriate performance in water flux and reverse salt diffusion as well as reasonable cost. The experiments we...

Performance and Structure of Thin Film Composite Reverse Osmosis Membranes Prepared by Interfacial Polymerization in the Presence of Acid Acceptor

During interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction between m-phenylenediamine (MPDA) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC), a by-product, i.e. hydrochloric acid can produce. This produced acid diffuses back in aqueous phase and protonates MPDA and reduces its reactivity that results in lowering of polymer yield and performance of membrane. Further, for getting consistency in reverse...

Preferential Solvation of Fenofibrate in (Ethanol or Acetone) + Water Mixtures at 298.15 K

The aim of this communication was to expand the results of numerical analyses performed by Sun et al. on their experimental solubility of fenofibrate in aqueous mixtures of ethanol and acetone at 298.15 K, in terms of the evaluation of the preferential solvation of this compound by the organic solvents and water in the saturated mixtures based on the inverse Kirkwood-Buff integrals (IKBI). ...
